How to Publish Your First Paper: From Research Idea to Acceptance

Publishing standards have changed substantially in the past eighteen months. The ICMJE Recommendations were updated in January 2026 with an entirely new section governing the use of artificial intelligence in publishing, alongside new guidance on authors' access to data and on scientific misconduct. CONSORT and SPIRIT were both re-issued in 2025 after fifteen and twelve years respectively. Reporting guidance for generative AI use in medical research (GAMER) was published in December 2025, and equity-focused reporting extensions such as STROBE-Equity have entered the mainstream. At the same time, AI-enabled paper mills and compromised peer review have driven record retraction volumes, and journals have responded by tightening desk-screening, data-availability and code-sharing requirements.

Early-career anesthesiologists, residents and fellows attempting their first publication are navigating this environment with guidance that is frequently two or more revision cycles out of date. This webinar delivers a current, practical roadmap from research question to acceptance, and explicitly addresses the structural barriers that disproportionately affect international medical graduates, non-native English speakers and trainees at institutions without established research infrastructure consistent with the mission of the Professional Diversity Committee.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

1. Formulate a focused, clinically relevant research question using the FINER and PICO frameworks, and identify a genuine knowledge gap through structured literature searching. (Session 1)
2. Select a study design appropriate to the question, the available data, and realistic institutional resources. (Session 1)
3. Construct each section of an IMRaD manuscript to the standard reviewers expect, and produce an abstract, title, and figure set that survive desk screening. (Session 2)
4. Respond constructively to peer review and re-target a rejected manuscript without repeating the errors that caused the rejection. (Session 2)
5. Apply current ICMJE authorship criteria and the January 2026 ICMJE provisions on artificial intelligence, and disclose generative AI use in line with the GAMER checklist. (Session 3)
6. Recognize predatory journals, paper-mill solicitation, and other integrity threats, and meet contemporary data- and code-availability expectations. (Session 3)
7. Identify and apply the correct reporting guideline, including CONSORT 2025, SPIRIT 2025, STROBE, and PRISMA 2020  together with the equity extensions now expected by major journals. (Session 4)
